Andrew Bassila
AP Calculus AB Math Subject Area Leader Mr. Bassila graduated Cum Laude with his Bachelor's in Mathematics and with his Master's of Arts in Teaching. AP Capstone Mr. Joensen graduated from the University of Tampa with his Bachelor’s degree in Secondary English Education before attaining his Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction, graduating Magna Cum Laude. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. from the University of South Florida in Curriculum and Instruction. Mr. Joensen is excited to begin his seventh year teaching at BDCHS. In his (limited) spare time he enjoys reading, watching The Office, and eating pizza. |
Kathleen Walsh

AP Studio Art AP Drawing Mrs. Mitchell, also known as "Coach Cookie", graduated from Florida State University with a Bachelor's Degree in Art. She also serves at the sponsor for the BDCHS National Art Honor Society and the Students of Color Association as well as being the Head Coach for both Girls and Boys Volleyball. In her spare time she enjoys traveling (cruising) and coaching travel volleyball. Mrs. Mitchell is entering her 5th year at BDCHS. |
Jessica Shattuck
AP US History AP US Government and Politics AP Subject Area Leader Mrs Shattuck graduated Magna Cum Laude with her Bachelor's in Secondary Social Science Education from the University of South Florida and is currently working on her Master's in American History and Government as a James Madison Fellow. AP Language and Composition Senior Class Advisor Mrs. Schult graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of South Florida with her BA in English Literature. She is very excited to be entering her 13th year in the classroom and her fourth year at BDCHS. She is also the advisor for the senior class and the Mock Trial team, as well as the co-advisor of the National English Honor Society. Outside of school, she loves spending time with her dogs and horses. |
Andrea Rinard
AP Literature English Subject Area Leader Mrs. Rinard earned her B.A. in English from the University of Florida, and her M.A. in English Education and a Graduate Certificate in Creative Writing from the University of South Florida. She is also an alumni of the Yale Writers Workshop. Mrs. Rinard teaches AP English Literature, Creative Writing, and dual-enrollment English and serves as co-advisor for the National English Honor Society at BDCHS and Subject Area Leader for the English/Language Arts team. She’s been a professional educator since 1993 and also has numerous works of fiction published in various literary magazines. Mrs. Rinard is a Tampa native who enjoys all the wonderful outdoor activities Florida has to offer when she’s not reading. She is currently working on writing her second novel. |
Holly Soltis
AP World History AP European History Ms. Soltis graduated Magna Cum Laude in History from the University of Florida before attaining her Master’s degree in Secondary Social Science. It was here she published her Honors Thesis “Sway and Scandal: The Sexual Politics of Eleanor of Aquitaine and Melisende of Jerusalem during the Second Crusades” in Alpata: A Journal of History. Ms. Soltis joined the BDCHS staff in 2015 and she sponsors the Model United Nations club, the History Bowl team in 2015, and coached the dance team in 2015-16. In her spare time she cuddles hers two cats, Minerva and Cena, and her dog Albus. |
Brandon Spencer
AP Environmental Science Mr. Spencer graduated from Utah State University with two Bachelor of Science degrees in Biology and Composite Teaching - Biology and minors in Chemistry, Physics, and German. He earned a Master's degree in Educational Technology from Ramapo College of New Jersey. Mr. Spencer is beginning his 19th year teaching, third at BDCHS. He enjoys outdoor activities and traveling and exploring the world. |
Daniel Allen
AP Physics Mr. Allen attended the University of Arkansas and graduated from St. Cloud State (MN) University with a BS in physical sciences (physics and chemistry). He later obtained his MS in Ed Leadership from Southwest State (MN) University. While teaching in Minnesota, he taught as an adjunct physics instructor at SCSU as well as high school physics and chemistry. He is the advisor to the CLIC student leadership program and is the head coach for flag football. Elsida Caraballo
AP Spanish Elsie Caraballo describes herself as a Spanish teacher, grammar geek, and a world trotter. She was born and raised in Puerto Rico and moved to Ohio in 2006. She attended the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico where she obtained a Bachelor Degree in Secondary Education. Elsie holds a Masters Degree in Classroom Technology from Bowling Green State University where she also worked as a Graduate Teacher Associate. Elsie enjoys immersing her students in meaningful language experiences through the use of technology. She also enjoys traveling with her students to Spanish-speaking countries and has had the opportunity to organize student tours to Spain, Costa Rica, and Ecuador. |
Bonita Steffen
AP Human Geography Mrs. Steffen graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of South Florida with her degree in Social Science Education, and is very excited to begin her first year at BDCHS. Before joining the Phoenix team, Mrs. Steffen taught 6th Grade American History. In her free time, she enjoys spending time at home with her husband watching Brooklyn 99 and Parks and Recreation, going to the beach, and spending time with her family and friends. |
